Two programs reflect on the rise of Nazi power in Germany
The Saint Leo University Center for Catholic-Jewish Studies (CCJS) welcomes the university community and the public to two events on November 9 featuring guest speaker Dr. Victoria Barnett. Dr. Barnett is a noted Holocaust historian and author who now works at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC. Her presentations on November 9 will commemorate Kristallnacht, the night in 1938 of the Nazi terror attacks on Jewish-owned businesses in Germany and elsewhere that marked the start of the Holocaust. She will share her research on two distinct topics with an afternoon talk at University Campus and an evening presentation in Tampa. Admission to both is free.
From 2 to 3:30 p.m., Dr. Barnett speaks on a famous theologian and pastor who opposed the Nazis in “Understanding Dietrich Bonhoeffer Today: New Questions, New Findings.” Bonhoeffer (1906-1945) was a young German Lutheran pastor who opposed the Third Reich and was executed for it. Yet he was considered one of the most influential Christian thinkers of the century. The program will be in the Greenfelder-Denlinger Boardrooms of the Student Community Center at University Campus. From 7 to 9 p.m., Dr. Barnett appears in Tampa to present “From Silence to Protest: Jewish, Catholic, and Protestant Responses during the Holocaust.” After Dr. Barnett speaks, CCJS supporter and author Rabbi James Rudin will comment. The event will take place at the McLoughlin Center on the Christ the King Catholic Church campus at 3809 W. Morrison Ave., Tampa, FL 33629. The center is just behind the church.
