0Spring 2017 theater production A Walk in the Woods
Saint Leo University English majors who are seniors specializing in theater are given the opportunity and challenge of presenting a senior showcase, a work that allows them to share the skills they have learned with an audience.
This year, senior Sam Stokes has chosen to act in Lee Blessing’s 1988 play A Walk in the Woods for his showcase. The play, based on a real-life incident that took place in 1982, is about two arms negotiators—a Soviet diplomat played by Sam and an American negotiator played by sophomore Richard O’Campo—who take a walk in the woods near Geneva, Switzerland, during a break. Tensions are high, and the men must learn to put aside their obvious differences to find some common ground. While it is more of a human interest story than one of geo-political strategy and military might, A Walk in the Woods, as Sam describes it, is “not really about negotiating an arms deal between the United States and the Soviet Union, but is rather about a bond that develops between two human beings.”
Performances are schedule for 7 p.m. on Friday, January 27, or Saturday, January 28, at the Black Box Theatre in Benedictine Hall at University Campus.
Admission is free, but proceeds from a $10 suggested donation will go directly to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
The production is sponsored by the Department of Language Studies and the Arts and presented in agreement with Dramatists Play Service Inc.
