0Sporting clays team takes 3rd in Lower East Coast Conference Championships, Wigh wins women’s title
Saint Leo’s sporting clays team competed in the Association of College Unions International/Scholastic Clay Target Program’s Lower East Coast Conference Championships February 9 – 12 in Savannah, GA. The team is under the direction of volunteer coach Mike D’Ambrosio, chief of University Safety and Emergency Management.
The Lions competed in disciplines such as skeet, trap, Super Sporting, and more. First-year student Abbey Wigh brought home the women’s championship. Wigh is competing to qualify for the Olympics.
Saint Leo earned third place in the regional championship, defeating 25 other qualifying teams including the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and Florida State, Stetson, Virginia Tech, and Auburn universities.
D’Ambrosio began coaching the team last year when students reached out to him for support. He manages two practices a week at the team’s home range Tampa Bay Sporting Clays in Land O’ Lakes, FL, works individually with the team on fundraisers and team unity, and travels with the team to tournaments and competitions. Saint Leo’s sporting clays team has raised $46,000 in in-kind gifts, sponsorships, and donations. The team is hosting a fundraiser to help the team compete at nationals, and donations may be made here.
