0Caps of Love sendoff, Monday, April 18, at 2 p.m. at University Campus
Faculty, staff, and students are invited to cheer on the departure of more than a dozen pallets of bottle caps for Caps of Love at 2 p.m. today, Monday, April 18, in Parking Lot 13 (near the Tennis Courts).
Caps of Love is a Florida-based, nonprofit organization that recycles three grades of plastic caps and lids of all sizes, shapes, and colors. The plastic is sold to a recycling company in Kentucky. All proceeds from the recycling go to purchase new and refurbished wheelchairs that will be donated to children in the United States with mobility disabilities. Since June 2015, Caps of Love has provided 20 wheelchairs to children in need.
This yearlong philanthropic project supports Saint Leo’s core value of community and has allowed students to attain community service hours. The students’ efforts created awareness and reached three surrounding counties, which has significantly impacted the Caps of Love program.
Students and the Office of Residence Life, Greek Life organizations, Campus Security and Safety personnel, Student Affairs staff, and community organizations, churches, and businesses were actively involved in cap collection. More than 14 locations on University Campus served as cap collection sites. Kudos to Campus Security and Safety personnel who won the trophy for the most caps collected weekly.
