Volunteer now for annual MLK Day of Service, January 17

The Saint Leo community is invited to celebrate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, January 17. There will be no classes at University Campus or at education centers on this day, and all students, faculty, and staff are invited to commemorate King’s life by participating in community service.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be an optional service day for employees; this will be a regular work day for those employees who choose not to participate in the optional service day.

As a reminder, while volunteering all students, staff, and faculty are expected to follow Saint Leo University’s COVID-19 guidelines.

Volunteer opportunities organized by Saint Leo include:

Saint Leo University Run Toward Justice Virtual 5K: The university’s Social Justice Committee is sponsoring the Saint Leo Run Toward Justice 5K to benefit local organizations that promote social justice initiatives throughout the community.

The virtual 5K race day is Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 17, 2022). Participants may run the 5K any day between January 1, and January 21, 2022. Participants may run, walk, or use any mobility assistance device to complete 3.1 miles.

All skill levels and abilities are welcome. The goal is to complete 3.1 miles in one session, and participants will monitor their own completion time. Participants may use a watch or any time keeping/race tracking app on their phone. After completing the race, participants must send their completion time to runtowardjustice@saintleo.edu.

The registration fee is $40 and will go to Hillsborough County Public Schools’ Migrant Education Program, which provides services to migrant students and their families. Challenges that the MEP helps mitigate are academic, health, social, parent engagement, and family literacy.

Sign up to volunteer by Thursday, January 13. Those who sign up to participate in one of the parades will receive details by Saturday, January 15. “Swag” will be provided to participants on the morning of the event (January 17). Lunch and transportation will be provided for those volunteering at the parades.
