0Faith, fellowship mix at University Ministry’s fall retreat
Saint Leo University held its annual fall retreat October 22-24 at the Warren Willis Camp and Conference Center on Lake Griffin near Fruitland Park, FL, and 45 students attended.
“The retreat allowed students to unplug from the busy rush of college life and to seek out a quiet place to hear the whisper of God in their hearts,” said Father Randall Meissen, university chaplain and director of University Ministry.
The theme for the retreat, “Into the Deep,” was inspired by the account of the miraculous catch in Luke 5:4, when Jesus invited Simon Peter to put out into the deep and lower his nets for a catch.
Participants embarked on an experience of deep reflection and prayer following the model of the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola.
Father Ed Hopkins served as keynote preacher for the event, leading sessions reflecting on the wonder creation, the wounds of sin, and the dynamism of redemption in relationship with God who loves us, Meissen said. Ample times were available for Mass and Confession with Meissen and Hopkins, in addition to games, praise and worship music, and discipleship offered by university ministers Deidre Merrill and Lucas Nocera.
