Women’s soccer to hold Be The Match, Leukemia Awareness Night on September 29
The Saint Leo women’s soccer program and its alumni will host a Leukemia Awareness Night in honor of Saint Leo alumna Jasmine Johnson ’12, who fought to bring awareness to the cause throughout her lifetime. The event will take place during the women’s soccer team’s contest with Eckerd, at 7 p.m., Wednesday, September 29, at the Saint Leo soccer field at University Campus. The team is partnering with Be The Match® and will have a booth for those in attendance to get swabbed to test to see if they are a match for a potential bone marrow transplant recipient.
Johnson, who was a two-time All-South Region selection for the Lions, battled leukemia starting in 2009 until she passed away in May at the age of 35. She was named to the All-Sunshine State Conference Second Team in 2010 as a junior while also earning Second Team All-South Region accolades from both Daktronics and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). She followed that up with an NSCAA All-South Region Second Team honor as a senior in 2011. Overall she competed in 38 career games for the Lions, scoring five goals and dishing out 10 assists while holding down the defensive line. She helped lead the Lions in 2011 to their first Sunshine State Conference Regular Season Championship.
This cause was important to Johnson, and the women’s soccer team and alumni wanted to host Leukemia Awareness Night in her honor.
Along with the Be The Match® booth, which will have information on the organization as well as the swabbing station, a former coach who spent time mentoring Johnson will speak during halftime as well as a leukemia survivor, who will speak to the importance of the bone marrow transplant program and getting tested to see if you are a match.
