Start academic year with prayer, Mass of the Holy Spirit on September 2
For the opening of each academic year, Catholic colleges and universities have the tradition of celebrating a Mass of the Holy Spirit. This dates back to 16th century Europe and allows the entire university community to come together to invoke the Holy Spirit for guidance and wisdom throughout academic year.
Saint Leo University will come together at 11 a.m., Thursday, September 2, at the Saint Leo Abbey Church. Classes will follow a modified schedule at University Campus. Mass will be celebrated by Abbot Isaac Camacho, OSB, Saint Leo alumnus and member of the Saint Leo University Board of Trustees. Father Randall Meissen, LC, university chaplain and director of University Ministry, will concelebrate the Mass.
Because of COVID-19 safety protocols, guests will be welcome inside the church until the sanctuary reaches 50 percent of its normal capacity. Once the church reaches that occupancy cap, other guests may still join virtually via the Saint Leo Abbey’s Facebook page.
Mass will be livestreamed for the benefit of the entire Saint Leo community. Whether you work or teach online, at an education center, or at University Campus, you are invited to join in this celebration of Mass.
Prayer is an essential part of the Benedictine community, and as Saint Leo was founded by Benedictine priests, monks, and sisters, it remains a part of our university community.
Everyone is invited to pray for our students—new and returning—and all members of our Saint Leo community as we begin our new year.
