Saint Leo faculty leading course on Florida coastal ecology

Several members of the science faculty at University Campus will be the instructors this summer for a community course on coastal ecology being offered through a new collaboration.

Saint Leo University has been approved to host programs for the Florida Master Naturalist Program, a popular natural history training program for adults originating from the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, better known as IFAS. IFAS has a strong reputation statewide for offering adult-education courses to the general public at various community sites.

The first course to come from Saint Leo from this new arrangement will be a hybrid offering with live online instruction and self-guided field activities and is called Florida Master Naturalist Program: Coastal Systems. It will be led by Dr. Bill Ellis, with instructor Cheryl Berry and Dr. Laura Altfeld, and Dr. Chris Miller assisting. The course is intended for those ages 18 and above, for people who are enthusiastic about learning more about the natural environment, and those who want to lead others on nature tours.

Instruction will take place over 10 sessions (partial days) from Wednesday, July 7, through Wednesday, August 4. The registration deadline is 10 a.m., Friday, July 2. For registration, course details, and payment, visit this site. This information will also be shared with the public.

More information on the collaboration with the Florida Master Naturalist Program and future local courses will be available soon.
