Social Work Conference set for October 2 on virtual platform

The Sixth Annual Social Work Conference, organized by the university’s Undergraduate and Graduate Social Work departments, is moving to a Fall 2020 Semester date and virtual platform.

The conference will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (ET) on Friday, October 2, and its theme is “Strengthening Generations of Families and Communities.”  The conference will feature solution-oriented presentations to social problems that may include family or school violence, trauma, mental illness, and obstacles to successful re-entry to society for individuals coming out of prison. Register by Tuesday, September 15.

The conference guest speaker this year is a law enforcement veteran who has concentrated in recent years on the fight against human trafficking. He is Corporal Alan Wilkett of the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office. Wilkett was awarded the 2017 Florida Human Trafficking Law Enforcement Official of the Year and recently received the Law Enforcement Lifetime Achievement Award from the Florida Crime Prevention Association. The second award reflects the extensive work he also has done in crime prevention, and in training community groups and nongovernmental organizations.

The conference is open to social work professionals and interested members of the public. Continuing education credits will be processed for a modest fee of $20. Registration for attendees not affiliated with Saint Leo University is $20. Saint Leo University faculty, alumni, students, and staff may attend for free, and share this information with interested parties.

More details are available on the conference registration page. For answers to any other questions, email msw@saintleo.edu with the words “2020 Social Work Conference” in the subject line of the email.
