Join us for Wild Gifts: A Reading by Creative Writing Faculty on September 18
The Department of Language Studies and the Arts presents “Wild Gifts: A Reading by Creative Writing Faculty” with Anne Barngrover, Patrick Crerand, Brooke King, Steve Kistulentz, and Gianna Russo at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 18, in Selby Auditorium, in Lewis Hall. Join us for a special evening of storytelling and poetry delivered by our gifted faculty.
Anne Barngrover’s second book of poetry, Brazen Creature, was published with University of Akron Press in 2018 and was named a finalist for the 2019 Ohioana Award in Poetry. Her poems and essays can be found in journals such as Boulevard, Copper Nickel, Crazyhorse, Ecotone, and River Teeth. Barngrover is an assistant professor of English and creative writing at Saint Leo and lives in Tampa.
Patrick Crerand is the author of The Paper Life They Lead from Arc Pair Press. His recent work has appeared in Hobart, Flyway, Quarter after Eight and other magazines. He lives in Dade City with his wife and three children.
Brooke King is an adjunct professor of creative writing at Saint Leo. She served in the U.S. Army, deploying to Iraq in 2006 as a wheel-vehicle mechanic. Her nonfiction work has appeared in numerous publications, including Prairie Schooner and War, Literature, and the Arts, and such anthologies as It’s My Country Too: Women’s Military Stories from the American Revolution to Afghanistan (Potomac Books, 2017). Her debut memoir, War Flower: My Life After Iraq (Potomac Books, 2019) has been heralded as “An absolutely compelling war memoir marked by the author’s incredible strength of character and vulnerability” by Kirkus. King is working on her next book, the follow-up to War Flower.
Steve Kistulentz is the author of Panorama, named a most anticipated novel of 2018 by the Chicago Review of Books, and a must-read selected by publications as diverse as Entertainment Weekly and the New York Post. He is also the author of two collections of poetry, Little Black Daydream (2012), an editor’s choice selection in the University of Akron Press Series in Poetry, and The Luckless Age (2010), selected from more than 700 manuscripts as the winner of the Benjamin Saltman Award. He is the founding director of Saint Leo’s graduate creative writing program.
Gianna Russo is the author of the forthcoming poetry collections, One House Down(Madville Publishing, 2019); Moonflower, winner of a Florida Book Award; and two chapbooks, Blue Slumber and The Companion of Joy. She is founding editor of YellowJacket Press, Florida’s premiere publisher of poetry chapbook manuscripts. She has published poems in Green Mountains Review, Negative Capability, Crab Orchard Review, Apalachee Review, The Sun, Poet Lore, saw palm, The MacGuffin, Florida Review, Tampa Review, Ekphrasis, Florida Humanities Council Forum, Karamu, The Bloomsbury Review, and Calyx, among others. She was named Creative Loafing’s Best of the Bay Local Poet in 2017. She holds an MFA in poetry from the University of Tampa and is assistant professor of English and creative writing at Saint Leo, where she teaches in both the undergraduate and graduate programs and serves as editor-in-chief of Sandhill Review and director of the Sandhill Writers Retreat.
