Women’s History Month begins March 1 with activities at University Campus
Saint Leo’s celebration of Women’s History Month kicks off Friday, March 1, when the university hosts the Women in Data + Science conference and networking event and the College of Arts and Science’s A Celebration of Women’s HERstory open house.
More than 100 people are registered for the conference, which will be held at University Campus from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, March 1. The inaugural Women in Data + Science Conference is a forum for academics, industry professionals, and students to openly discuss and offer solutions to issues affecting women in data-infused fields: from gender bias to advocating for your work.
Registration for the conference is free and open to the public. Lunch cost is $15, but Saint Leo students can eat for free by using the promotional code SLUStudent at checkout. Visit the conference website to register.
The Women’s HERstory open house will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Greenfelder-Denlinger Boardroom A in the Student Community Center. It will feature student interactive displays, poster presentations, and more.

Saint Leo will welcome a special guest on Monday, March 4, when the Campus Activities Board (CAB) and the Multicultural and International Services Office (MISO) co-host spoken-word artist and poet Ashlee Haze.
She will perform at 6 p.m. in the Glen E. Greenfelder and Janet L. Denlinger Boardrooms at the SCC. She was an Individual World Poetry Slam finalist, three-time Queen of the South Poetry Slam champion, two-time Women of the World Poetry Slam finalist, and two- time National Poetry Slam semifinalist, and recently was featured in the Lane Bryant #thisbody campaign.
“I give myself permission to be and that is all that matters,” states Haze in one of her poems.

Other Women’s HERstory events for the month include:
- Tuesday, March 5, 2 to 4 p.m., on the green by the College of Business building, next to the fountain – “Spill the Tea” for Women’s HERstory, sponsored by Green Dot and MISO;
- Wednesday, March 6, 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the Dining Hall lobby – Breast and ovarian cancer and HPV information will be presented by the Health Center;
- Thursday, March 7, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., in front of the Student Activities Building near the clock tower – Stride Like a Lady – Walk in a survivor’s/victim’s shoes will be sponsored by Green Dot, Sunrise of Pasco County, and MISO). There will be chalk illustrations and signs with statistics about violence against women and domestic violence, and there will be a display of shoes with a survivor’s/ victim’s story in them that people can walk with to “walk in their shoes.” And,
- Friday, March 8, 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the Dining Hall lobby – Important Figures in Women’s HERstory “tabling” will present information about women who have made or are making history.
