0Military networking webinar series to host local Marine Corps veteran and business owner
Join the Office of Military Affairs and Services and the Department of WorldWide Student Life as they host U.S. Marine Corps veteran and local business owner Mary Katherine Mason, during Conversations about Success Beyond Service being held at 5 p.m. (ET) on Wednesday, May 17. Learn about our guest veteran’s journey and what it takes to turn a side hustle into a successful veteran-owned and operated business.
Mason was in the hotel interior design and construction industry for 13 years until COVID-19 ended that career abruptly in June 2020. She used the downtime to make her Great-grandma Murray’s shortbread for clients during the Christmas season, but it didn’t stop there.
After winning the Scottish Highland Games Shortbread Competition, she knew she had to share this family treat with the world! And so, with Mason standing just shy of 6 feet tall, Lanky Lassie’s Shortbread — “long legs, shortbread” — was born in 2011. She took her side hustle and turned it into a thriving business in the historic and charming downtown Dade City, FL, close to University Campus.
Mason is a Florida native, born in Dade City. She is a graduate of Zephyrhills High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Florida. She also is a service-disabled, wounded U.S. Marine (2002-2008).
While running her business full time, Mason also is a member of the Downtown Dade City Merchants Association, the Dade City Garden Club, and the Co-op (including the city of Dade City, Greater Dade City Chamber of Commerce, and the merchants), is a part of the Dade City historic preservation community, and sings in the Sweet Adeline’s quartet, Speakeasy.
