0Robotics day camps offered for middle, high school students this summer
Saint Leo will offer two robotics summer camps this year — one designed for middle school-age students and the other one for high school students. The university has hosted robotics camps aimed at different student groups since 2015, and the camps always are popular.
The co-ed middle school robotics day camp will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., June 5 – 9. Campers will use LEGO® MINDSTORMS® kits to learn how to build and program robots. The students do not need prior experience with programming or building with Legos, and they will work in teams of two.
The co-ed high school robotics day camp with Python programming language will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., June 12 – 16. Campers in this age group also will use LEGO® MINDSTORMS® kits to learn how to build and program robots. They do not need prior experience with programming or building with Legos, and they will learn to program using Python.
“Both camps will help students appreciate the growing field of robotics, engage in STEM [science technology, engineering, and math] learning, and build friendships, as well as learn to work in teams, among other things,” said Dr. Monika Kiss, who conducts Saint Leo’s robotics camps. Kiss is a professor of mathematics and the current chair of the Mathematics Department.
Lunch will be provided in the university’s Dining Hall, a favorite of all the campers. Students also are encouraged to bring a water bottle that can be refilled each day as the university has bottle refill stations throughout the campus.
The camps will meet in the Tapia College of Business building at Saint Leo University, 33701 County Road 52 (formerly State Road 52), St. Leo, FL 33574. Cost for each camp is $300.
