0Women’s tennis finishes as national runners-up at ITA Indoors
WHAT
The women’s tennis team competed February 24 – 26 in the ITA National Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Nebraska-Kearney. It is the women’s second time ever at the event, after not qualifying last season. Saint Leo lost to fellow Sunshine State Conference foe, Barry University in the finals 4-0. Saint Leo entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed and the No. 3 team in the nation. They defeated nationally ranked No. 5 Flagler College in the first round and No. 9 North Georgia in the semifinals before falling to No. 1 ranked Barry in the title match.
WHO
Saint Leo Tennis is led by head coach Chad Berryhill and assistant coach Maria Soler Valverde. Participating this past weekend were Marta Vicens Miquel, Lavinia Lancellotti, Luzia Obermeier, Celina Ermann, Kamilya Shailina, Camila Keller, Claudia Borbon Roca, and Jade Bellegy. As part of the roster are Isabelle Niehoff and Paris Marozzelli.
WHY
The top eight teams in the country were invited to play in the ITA National Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Nebraska-Kearney.
IMPACT
This is the Women’s Tennis Team’s first trip to the national title match of the ITA National Indoors.
