Learn more about opportunities to volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters

Faculty, staff, and students are invited to find out about being a mentor for youngsters in Pasco County as well as surrounding counties.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is looking for mentors for children in Pasco County and other areas! For as little as one hour a week, volunteers can add joy to the life of a child, and ultimately, contribute greatly to his or her potential.

As the nation’s largest volunteer-supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 5 through young adulthood in communities across the country.

Our community representative says, “Through the mentoring network, more than 95 percent of littles are less likely to be involved with illegal activities, feel they have a trusting adult in their lives [other than a parent or relative] and are promoted to the next grade level. Mentoring is one of the most rewarding, enjoyable, and simple things a volunteer can do.”

While Big Brothers Big Sisters accepts volunteers from all backgrounds, there is a greater need for male mentors. This year from August 1 through November 8, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay is searching for 100 Men in 100 Days to become a positive mentor to a child in our local communities. An overwhelming number of children on the waiting list have requested a Big Brother, or mentor, to connect with. There are more than 150 children just in Pasco County on the waiting list to be matched.

To learn more about this opportunity, Saint Leo community members may visit Big Brothers Big Sisters at one of our upcoming campus events: Volunteer Fair, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Wednesday, August 31, in the Student Community Center Greenfelder-Denlinger Boardrooms, and Involvement Fair, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Thursday, September 8, on the Kirk Lawn.
