0Sporting clays team earns 14th place in US in its first national competition
Saint Leo University’s sporting clays team recently competed in the ACUI Collegiate National Championships at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio, Texas. The ACUI Clay Targets program was established in 1968 and is the oldest collegiate shotgun sports program.
In its first year of competition, the Saint Leo sporting clays team placed in several categories at the national championships, March 19-26. Overall, the team placed 14th in the United States in its division defeating schools such as Central Missouri.
Results for the team include:
American Skeet, the team came in 13th in the country in its division.
American Trap, the team was 15th, beating the scores of Florida State University, Central Missouri, and Stetson.
Sporting Clays, the team placed 13th, beating the scores of University of Virginia, Stetson, Clarkson, the University of Vermont and Colorado Mesa.
International Trap, co-captain Scott Schludt shot 34th in the United States.
Super Sporting, while withstanding 50 mph winds, Schludt came in 76th and Isaac Standridge came in 245th in the United States.
In addition, many team members scored personal bests during the national competition.
Coached by Mike D’Ambrosio, director of University Safety, with the help of Assistant Coach Richard Bon, also of University Safety, the team practices at its home range of Tampa Bay Sporting Clays in Land O’ Lakes, FL.
The Saint Leo Sporting Clays Team is a competitive team that operates as one of four such teams, sponsored and funded by the Division of Student Affairs and not governed by the NCAA. The competitive teams include esports, GoldRush dance team, and cheerleading. GoldRush and cheerleading have qualified for national competitions in April.
