0Holy Week observances planned
The Saint Leo community is invited to Holy Week observances at University Campus and the Abbey Church. Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday—also known as Passion Sunday—which is April 10 this year.
University Ministry will lead a Palm Sunday procession with palms—weather permitting, from Saint Jude Chapel at the Student Activities Building to the Abbey Church at 7 p.m., April 10, and the student Mass will follow. Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, when the crowd waved palm branches.
The summit of the liturgical year is the Easter triduum—from the evening of Holy Thursday to the evening of Easter Sunday. Though chronologically three days, they are liturgically one day unfolding the unity of Christ’s paschal mystery.
The single celebration of the triduum marks the end of the Lenten season, and leads to the Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord at the Easter Vigil.
The university community is invited to celebrate with the monastic community of the Benedictine Monks of Saint Leo Abbey at the Saint Leo Abbey Church at 7 p.m. Mass on Holy Thursday, April 14, and at Good Friday services at 3 p.m., Friday, April 15.
Several Saint Leo students will be baptized and welcomed into the church at the Easter Vigil at St. Anthony Parish in San Antonio, FL, with the vigil Mass starting at 8 p.m., Saturday, April 16. Easter Vigil services with the monastic community at Saint Leo Abbey Church will be at 8:30 p.m.
There are no morning Masses at the Abbey Church on Easter. However, University Ministry will celebrate 7 p.m. Mass at the Abbey Church on Easter Sunday, April 17.
