Café 36 was named in recognition of our rich Saint Leo University history. On St. Jovita’s feast day in February 1882, Judge Edmund F. Dunne finally completed his search across 100,000 acres of recently purchased land and found the perfect location in Florida to establish a Catholic colony. On that day, he handpicked San Antonio for its distinctive rolling hills and bountiful lakes, and during the next four years, the colony grew. In 1886, Dunne offered to gift a valuable tract of land to the Benedictine monks and sisters on the condition that they start a college. That tract of land was 36 acres. Nearly seven years to the day when Dunne set foot on the southern banks of Lake Jovita, Abbot Leo Haid arrived to establish Saint Leo College.
