Join in Celebration of Black History, February 24

The College of Arts and Sciences will host its annual Celebration of Black History on Thursday, February 24. This year the Study of African-American Life and History has chosen the theme “Black Health and Wellness.”  Nationally, the month’s events will examine how American health care has often underserved the African-American community, and the month will focus on fostering good health care and wellness, from Western medicine to traditional practices.

Join the College of Arts and Sciences from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, February 24, in the Glen E. Greenfelder-Janet L. Denlinger Boardrooms in the Student Community Center for engaging activities and discussion panels that honor those who promote health in wellness among the African-American community. 

Presentations include:  

11 a.m.  – 12:30 p.m. –  Dr. Ebony Perez presentation on “Hip-Hop and Mental Health.”

12:30 – 1:30 p.m. –  Student Affairs presents the Black History Month luncheon with Julian Waits, senior vice president of of Rapid7 and founder of Cyversity, a nonprofit organization seeking to increase the number of underrepresented individuals in the field of cybersecurity. Waits will discuss his experience as a man of color in high technology and share thoughts about increasing inclusion in the workplace. Reservations are required due to limited space for the luncheon. Ongoing presentations include:

  • Megan Case – “Hair Love” award-winning film short and discussion
  • Dr. Karen Hannel – Black Women of the Civil Rights Movement
  • Medical Humanities presentation
  • Dr. Heather Parker, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences – “Black Superheroes and Perceptions of Black Beauty.”

This event is free and open to the public. All are welcome.
