University community invited to sign part of the Wellness Center

Students, faculty, and staff are invited to be a part of university history and sign a piece of the Wellness Center!

On Monday, November 16, and Tuesday, November 17, a steel beam that will soon be part of the ceiling of the Wellness Center will be placed much closer to ground, outside the Student Activities Building, where our community members can sign it. If you are not familiar with a ”beam signing,” it is a custom that marks a major milestone in the construction of new buildings. It typically involves the last beam to be hoisted into place. People sign their names and may add well wishes. Saint Leo University follows this custom as well.  In this instance, the ceiling beam being used is a literal marker of the height the Wellness Center will reach, and shows what the construction crews have accomplished.  Signing the beam and leaving a comment—clean and respectful remarks only—is a fun and collaborative activity.

After the signing, the beam will be eventually installed in its proper place in the Wellness Center building frame during a “Topping Ceremony,” another part of the custom. The ceremony will be held in December.
