0Advent begins November 29—take time for prayer, reflection
The season of Advent begins on Sunday, November 29, and marks a time of anticipation and preparation, which takes place through the four Sundays before Christmas. Advent is observed in many Western Christian churches and marks the beginning of the liturgical year in the Catholic Church.
The word Advent is derived from the Latin advenio, “to come to,” and refers to the coming of Christ. The liturgical color for Advent is purple, like Lent. “Advent (like Lent) includes an element of penance in the sense of preparing, quieting, and disciplining our hearts for the full joy of Christmas,” the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops states.
The Catholic Diocese of St. Petersburg (FL) is offering an Advent opportunity for the Saint Leo community to receive a reflection each day of Advent via email.
“Prepare for the birth of Jesus by reflecting on your faith journey with short inspirational messages sent to your email each day!” the diocese stated. “You are invited to sign up to receive a daily ‘Be Courageous’ reflection on Courageously Living the Gospel presented by writers from around the Diocese of St. Petersburg, including Bishop Gregory Parkes, who is a member of the Saint Leo University Board of Trustees. Writers include members of the Benedictine Sisters of Florida and the Benedictine Monks of Saint Leo Abbey.
