Saint Leo sponsors event to encourage math interest in teens

As a community service, each year Saint Leo University invites up to 30 middle school students who live near University Campus to participate in the American Mathematics Competition (AMC) 8.  Saint Leo underwrites the cost of the test used in competition so that entry is free to students and their families. This option is available to children of employees and to families in surrounding communities, so feel free to share this information. The AMC 8 is a national event developed by the Mathematical Association of America to encourage students to develop positive attitudes about mathematics and analytical thinking. The AMC 8 allows middle grade students to apply their knowledge to a 25-question, multiple-choice exam given in a friendly environment. Our mathematics faculty administer and monitor the test. Students have 40 minutes to complete the questions. They can learn more about the subject matter here: https://www.maa.org/math-competitions/amc-8.

This year the test is set for Wednesday, November 13, in TECO Hall in the Tapia College of Business building. Students are asked to arrive by 5:45 p.m. to get ready. The testing starts at 6 p.m. Advance registration is necessary. Parents must contact Dr. Kevin Murphy of the Saint Leo University mathematics faculty to reserve a spot. He can be reached by email at kevin.murphy@saintleo.edu, and please include the phrase “AMC 8” in the subject line. Alternately, parents may call (352) 588-7192.
