0Tale of ‘Strawberry Girl’ featured at special program hosted by Benedictine Sisters of Florida
The Benedictine Sisters of Florida present An Afternoon with Author Lois Lenski & Strawberry Girl at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 20, at Holy Name Monastery 12138 Wichers Road, St. Leo, FL.
Anna Cotton will portray famous author and illustrator, Lois Lenski, and Anna Yates will perform as Birdie Boyer, the young protagonist in the 1946 Newberry Award winning novel Strawberry Girl. Their story-telling program will include conversations based on fictional letters shared between Lenski and Strawberry Girl. This entertaining program, set in mid-20th century Central Florida, features what grew in abundance here—strawberries, farming families, and tales told about them.
Published poet, amateur historian, retired teacher, and active grandmother, Cotton has lived and worked in Lakeland for 32 years. She volunteers as a guest presenter sharing the story of Strawberry Girl and created the script for this program. Yates is a Florida Cracker four generations back on both sides of her family. As a Southeastern University graduate who majored in English, she loves books and stories about her native Florida, and has been delighted to learn more about her own history as she works on the Strawberry Girl project. During the day she is a nanny and social media content creator, and on the side she pursues her goal of writing and directing for film. Her old Florida heritage, informs her passion in little-known stories from little-known places, and she’s excited to share part of her history through the Strawberry Girl presentation.
