0University Campus Hosts Middle School Contest November 13
As a community service, Saint Leo University invites middle schoolers to University Campus to participate for free in the American Mathematics Competition (AMC) 8, scheduled for Tuesday, November 13. This is a national competition developed by the Mathematical Association of America, and Saint Leo again is serving as a host site.
The purpose of the contest is to encourage students to develop positive attitudes about mathematics and analytical thinking by giving them a chance to apply their classroom learning to a 25-question, multiple-choice exam given in a friendly environment. Saint Leo is able to accommodate 30 students. Mathematics faculty will monitor the contest. More information about the kinds of questions asked is available here.
Participating students are asked to arrive by 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, November 13, and to come directly to Selby Auditorium in Lewis Hall. The exam starts at 6 p.m. Students have 40 minutes to complete the questions.
Advance registration is required. Parents of students who want to participate must contact Dr. Kevin Murphy of the Saint Leo University mathematics faculty. His email address is kevin.murphy@saintleo.edu and the email should include the phrase “AMC 8” in the subject line. Alternately, parents may call Dr. Murphy at (352) 588-7192.
