0Registration taking place for Girls Can! Robotics Camps for July
Saint Leo University’s popular summer robotics camps are back this year and openings remain for the Girls Can! Overnight Camp, to take place Tuesday, July 10, through Friday, July 13, and for the Girls Can! Robotics Camp that will be offered Monday, July 16, through Friday, July 20.
The camps will take place at University Campus, 33701 State Road 52, St. Leo, FL 33574. The overnight camp is for girls ages 10 to 15 with prior robotic experience, and it will give them the opportunity to not only explore science and math, but also the chance to experience campus life. They will stay in a residence hall, Apartment 6. Cost for the overnight camp is $300, which includes organized activities.
The day camp, also for girls ages 10 to 15, will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily. Participants will be served snacks and lunches. Cost is $200.
The campers will learn to build LEGO® Mindstorm robots and spend time learning programming. Activities will take place in Kirk Hall at the university.
As a part of programming, they will use their mathematical skills to design algorithms, their science skills to figure out what their robot can and can’t do, and their problem-solving skills to come up with excellent programs, said Dr. Monika Kiss of Saint Leo’s mathematics faculty. In addition to the academic skills they will learn by learning to program, they will also learn a lot of soft skills, such as teamwork, communication skills, leadership skills, and improved self-confidence.
