Learn about new service, therapy animal course — November 1
Know a student who is interested in animals as well as helping others? From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, November 1, students may learn about a special topics course. IDSE300, Interdisciplinary Approaches to Service and Therapy Animals will be offered by the School of Education and Social Services at University Campus during Spring 1.
Encourage students to stop by the Student Activities Building green to visit with therapy dogs, receive a Frisbee, and learn about the new course.
The course will be offered from 12:30 to 1:50 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This course provides an overview of how human-animal interactions (HAI) and the human-animal bond (HAB) can impact animals, society, and work with interdisciplinary helping professions. Topics include: the social, physical and emotional/psychological impacts of HAI with interdisciplinary helping professions; educational benefits, therapeutic roles of animals; ethical and animal welfare considerations; and the connection between violence toward people and violence toward animals. While being taught from an interdisciplinary helping professions perspective, the content of this course is widely applicable across education, human services, social work, and criminal justice professions.
