0New course for Fall 2017 — Interdisciplinary Approaches to Service and Therapy Animals
Faculty and staff in the School of Education and Social Services are encouraged to share information about a special topics course, Interdisciplinary Approaches to Service and Therapy Animals, that will be offered for Fall 2017. The course is scheduled at University Campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30 to 1:50 p.m., and the description is below.
IDS300 / Interdisciplinary Approaches to Service and Therapy Animals
The majority of households in the United States report having at least one companion animal, and many industries are leveraging this human animal bond to promote positive change. This course provides an overview of how human-animal interactions (HAI) and the human-animal bond (HAB) can impact animals, society, and work with interdisciplinary helping professions. Topics include: the social, physical and emotional/psychological impacts of HAI with interdisciplinary helping professions; educational benefits, therapeutic roles of animals; ethical and animal welfare considerations; and the connection between violence toward people and violence toward animals. While being taught from an interdisciplinary helping professions perspective, the content of this course is widely applicable across education, human services, social work, and criminal justice professions.
If you have any students interested in the course, please share the information. For more information, contact Dr. Rhonda Waddell at rhondda.waddell@saintleo.edu.
