Project Semicolon to promote mental health awareness

Counseling Services will present Project Semicolon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, January 18, at the Student Activities Building loggia. Faculty, staff, and students are invited to participate.

Project Semicolon is a movement dedicated to presenting hope and love for those who are struggling with mental illness, suicide, addiction, and self-injury. It serves to encourage, love, and inspire. The vision is that together we can achieve lower suicide rates in the United States and around the world; together we can start a conversation about suicide, mental illness, and addiction that can’t be stopped.

Many people now sport a semicolon tattoo, often on a wrist, to represent this movement.

Amy Bleuel began the national crusade in 2013 following her father’s suicide, her own physical abuse and rape, and many other trials. The punctuation mark was selected because, “a semicolon is used when an author could’ve chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life.”

Saint Leo’s Project Semicolon will include activities, resources about mental health, and temporary semicolon tattoos. “Our goal is to take the stigma away from talking about mental illness and allow everyone in our community a place to talk and come for support,” said Tiffany Nelson, prevention counselor for Counseling Services.
