Celebrating our first-generation students, faculty, staff

Saint Leo is participating in First-Generation College Celebration Day in which colleges and universities across the country applaud their first-generation students each year. This year’s celebration will take place on Thursday, November 8.

The National Association of Student Affairs Administrator (NASPA) and The Suder Foundation have joined to create The Center for First-Generation Student Success, which initiated this celebration.

About 33 percent of those enrolled in college are first-generation students, which Saint Leo saw reflected in our current Class of 2022.

The Office of First Year Experience would like to share stories from those who will be the first in their families to earn a degree. “Why I’m First” will feature students, faculty, and staff sharing why it is/was important for them to go to college. Participants will be photographed or videotaped. First Year Experience hopes to present these on November 8.

Share your stories and encourage students to share theirs. Contact Dawn D. McElveen, director of First Year Experience, at dawn.mcelveen@saintleo.edu or call (352) 588-8499.
