New university chatbot helps answer student questions

Saint Leo University is providing another opportunity for students to receive help with the addition of a chatbot called Leona. Using artificial intelligence, Leona can help answer more than 400 common questions that students may have about their university experience.

Starting on September 6, Leona will be made available to all students and can assist in answering questions ranging from how to change courses and receive tutoring support to how to get involved with a student organization or receive help from Information Technology. As time goes on, Leona will be able to learn more about the types of questions students have and provide more in-depth answers.

Students will receive an introductory email about Leona on Thursday, September 1, followed by a text from Leona on Tuesday, September 6. Students will receive the text message on all phone numbers that they have registered with the university in Colleague and may choose to opt out if they like. Students who wish to provide a different number for Leona, may contact leona@saintleo.edu.

For students who stay connected to Leona, they will receive a text every seven to 10 days to see how their Saint Leo experience is going, and if she can provide any help. The intent is to help students understand that we care about them, we want to help them succeed, and we look forward to their return to campus for next semester and beyond.

Faculty and staff who may have questions about helping students with Leona may contact leona@saintleo.edu.
