Town of St. Leo honors university

On November 9, Mayor Richard Christmas, of the town of St. Leo, presented President Jeffrey Senese with a proclamation recognizing Saint Leo University’s 130 years of Benedictine education and service to the town and the community.

“Whereas, Saint Leo University is celebrating 130 years of Benedictine education having been founded in 1889 and opening in 1890; and,

“Whereas, Saint Leo University is the oldest Catholic university in Florida with more than 98,400 alumni worldwide, and more than 18,200 students, with 2,247 of those students enrolled at the main campus on the banks of the beautiful Lake Jovita and in the rolling hills of the Town of St. Leo,” the proclamation begins.

Christmas recognized the university for its shared past with the town, Holy Name Monastery and Benedictine Sisters of Florida, and Saint Leo Abbey and the Benedictine monks, which “share a history embodied with tradition that has formed a unique community based on shared benevolence and beliefs.”

The Saint Leo community appreciates the proclamation and looks forward to continuing the university’s relationship with the town.
