Human Resources updates smoke-free and tobacco-free policy

Saint Leo University is committed to providing a safe and healthy working and learning environment for students, faculty, and staff on its campus. Research findings show that tobacco use in general, including smoking and breathing secondhand smoke, constitute a significate health hazard. Therefore, the university has updated the smoke-free and tobacco-free policy to support a safe and healthy working and learning environment.

It is important as a community member of Saint Leo University to read the updated policy, which can be found on the Saint Leo Policies Library here . Below are highlights from the policy:

  • Smoking and the use of an electronic smoke device is prohibited in all enclosed indoor workplace locations.
  • Smoking is allowed in outdoor locations, except those designated as no-smoking areas.
  • Smoking and the use of an electronic smoke device is prohibited within 25 feet of any university building or athletic facility, any entrance to any university building or athletic facility, as well in all vehicles owned, leased or operated by the university.
  • Littering university property with remains of smoking products is prohibited.

There are currently additional general requirements in place to safeguard the health and well-being of all members of our university community during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is important to continue to follow these requirements when you are engaging in smoking on a break:

  • Social or Physical Distancing:
    • Always stay at least six (6) feet from other people – even when wearing a mask.
    • Stay out of crowded places and avoid mass gatherings.

If you are interested in taking steps to quit smoking, Human Resources has resources to help:

  • Aetna – Resources for Living
  • There is no copay to participate in coaching or counseling options through local area health education centers, Blue Cross Blue Shield telephonic coaching, or Resources for Living counseling.
  • Up to two cycles of tobacco cessation benefit per year.

Please contact wellness.benefits@saintleo.edu if you have any questions regarding the benefits above.
