Join University Ministry for chrism Mass at Cathedral of St. Jude

University Ministry is inviting everyone to attend this year’s chrism Mass on Tuesday, April 16, beginning the Holy Week observance. This year’s Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Gregory Parkes at the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle, 5815 Fifth Ave., St. Petersburg, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A university van will be available to transport participants to the Mass and participants will meet at about 9:30 a.m., said Father Kyle Smith ʾ07, university chaplain.

To attend, please RSVP to tiffany.fettig@saintleo.edu or call University Ministry at (352) 588-8292.

The chrism Mass usually is celebrated during Holy Week, preceding Easter and often is the largest annual gathering of the faithful in many diocese. Bishop Parkes will be joined in celebrating the Mass by Bishop Emeritus Robert Lynch ʾ97; retired Bishop Joseph Potocnak, SCJ; Abbot Isaac Comacho, OSB, ’95; and approximately 170 priests and 50 deacons as well as religious sisters and brothers, seminarians, and other representatives from 74 parishes and six missions in Pasco, Pinellas, Hillsborough, Hernando, and Citrus counties.

During this Mass, Parkes will consecrate the holy oils that will be used during thousands of baptisms and confirmations throughout the coming year.

The newly blessed and consecrated holy oils from the chrism Mass will be first used at the Easter Vigil Mass on Holy Saturday, April 20. On this day, more than 350 people will become new Catholics at parishes throughout the Diocese of St. Petersburg, including members of the Saint Leo community, receiving the sacraments of baptism, confirmation, and Communion.
