Registration underway for Spirit of Saint Leo
Registration is now underway for the 15th Annual Spirit of Saint Leo Golf Tournament, which will take place Monday, April 11, at the Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club South Course. This four-person scramble brings together alumni, former teammates, and friends of Saint Leo Athletics to support the nearly 350 student-athletes who wear the Green and Gold. Saint Leo men’s basketball makes third NCAA appearance in four seasons
Saint Leo men’s basketball made its third NCAA tournament appearance in the last four seasons when it earned the eight-seed for the NCAA South Region Championship. The Lions faced the top-seeded Alabama-Huntsville team for the second time this season, falling to the Chargers, 98-81, in Huntsville, AL. Read the game recap. Read the selection announcement.
Five Lions secure SSC weekly honors
Saint Leo student-athletes dominated last week’s Sunshine State Conference list of weekly honors, with five Lions earning recognition.
– Pauline Helgesson received SSC Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors.
– Softball seniors Alana Tabel and Tiffany Thompson were named SSC Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively.
– Men’s tennis freshman Alberto Barroso-Campos was named SSC Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week.
– For the second straight week, Dylan Yonts was tabbed as SSC Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week.
Basketball teams well-represented on SSC post-season awards
Saint Leo men’s and women’s basketball teams each received recognition when the 2016 Sunshine State Conference All-Conference teams were released last week. Chelsy Springs was tabbed as the 2016 SSC Women’s Basketball Newcomer of the Year, as well as Second Team All-SSC and SSC All-Newcomer Team honors. In men’s basketball, junior Marcus Dewberry was named First Team All-SSC, while Tyreece Brice and Caleb Stewart were named to the All-Newcomer Team.
Men’s lacrosse joins list of nationally ranked Saint Leo spring teams
Men’s lacrosse joined the list of Saint Leo spring teams that are nationally ranked, when it checked in at No. 20 in the USILA/Nike Division II Coaches Poll. Six of the Lions’ eight spring team sports are now ranked in their respective coaches’ polls, with women’s track already having one NCAA provisional qualifier.
Two other spring teams received poll updates this week:
– Softball held at No. 11 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Top 25 poll.
– Men’s golf held onto its No. 1 ranking in the Bushnell/Golfweek Division II Coaches poll, while falling to No. 2 in the Golfstat rankings.
