Choosing the Right Home
Home is where you hang your hat, where the heart is, and part of the American dream. When it comes to where you rest your head at night, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed. You have to make a lot of decisions. It can be so stressful that real estate agents often joke that they double as therapists! So, how can you make housing decisions a little easier? Here are some tips that can help:
- Know what you can afford. In order to know how much you will be able to pay toward rent or a mortgage, you need to figure out your debt-to-income ratio. Add up the monthly payments for all your debts—credit card payments, car payments, student loans, etc. These payments added to your rent or mortgage should equal no more than 33 percent of your income.
- Rent or buy? You may have heard that renting is “throwing your money away.” This isn’t really true. Take, for example, those who bought houses in 2006 or 2007. Many of their home values fell. Don’t just buy because you feel like you should. Run the numbers and think about your needs
- How much space do you need? According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the median size of a new single-family home sold in 2018 was 2,435 square feet. But more and more people want houses they can afford (and houses that don’t cost a fortune to heat and cool). Think about what space you really need. You don’t want space that goes unused. And remember, children don’t need their own rooms.
Choosing where to live is a big decision. If you have children—or want to—be sure to consider school districts. And, even if you are considering your dream home, it’s best to be reasonable. Tacky wallpaper and dated fixtures can be changed. But it can be harder to get out of a living situation that’s making you house poor. Visit Resources for Living and search on keyword “housing” to view articles and resources choosing and affording a place a place to live.
