Mark calendars for ‘Influential Women of Social Work,’ March 6

Save the date to celebrate some incredible women! The university’s second Influential Women of Social Work will be held 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday, March 6, at the Wellness Center at University Campus.

This event is sponsored by the Department of Undergraduate Social Work and the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Nature Coast Chapter and will recognize and honor members of the public and the university community who have positively influenced people in need during the past year.

During International Women’s Month, this event will celebrate and recognize trailblazers, but also will also champion opportunities to encourage other women to join this helping profession.

Thanks to the generosity of The Renew Group and its president, Dr. Leven “Chuck” Wilson, scholarships will be awarded during this event to Saint Leo University students pursuing Bachelor of Social Work degrees.

The keynote speaker will be Dr. Jessica Garlock, a social worker with more than 25 years of experience in the field. Garlock says she loves her profession, but she also is impatient with it at times when it has not seemed to reflect the needs of the communities that often depend on social workers to create change.

“Keeping a critical lens on ourselves, our colleagues and our profession is essential to meeting the needs of our ever changing world,” she said.

Currently, Garlock is working with UNICEF to develop community-based responses to child protection in the Federated States of Micronesia.

More information will be forthcoming, but save the date to attend this event.
