Inspiring speakers join Virtual Women in STEAM Conference, August 1

Saint Leo University will host the Virtual Women in STEAM conference on Saturday,  August 1, for women looking for inspiration and empowerment in the fields of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.

The conference is being presented at no cost to those who register in advance at https://www.saintleo.edu/women-in-steam-conference. Additionally, the conference is open to the public, so please feel free to share this information with colleagues, friends, and all who may be interested.

Saint Leo is excited about its two featured conference speakers, both prominent in their fields.

Dr. Talithia Williams, a statistician, college professor, author, and co-host of the 2018 NOVA Wonders documentary television series, is the keynote morning speaker. She loves to explain mathematical concepts to broad audiences in accessible ways and has delivered speeches nationally about how everyone can better understand their personal health through tracking data. Williams will speak at 10 a.m. (ET).

The afternoon’s featured speaker is a real-life rocket scientist, Dr. Aprille Ericsson, from the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. Her doctorate is in mechanical engineering, which helped her advance in the aerospace field and create and employ programs for satellite missions. Ericsson will speak at 4 p.m. (ET).

Both women are advocates for more diversity in their fields and in STEAM-related areas.

Saint Leo faculty and alumni will present throughout the day as well. Consult the program on the conference webpage  for times. The conference will open at 8:45 a.m. (ET) with a welcome from Dr. Mary T. Spoto, vice president of Academic Affairs.

The sponsor of the event is Saint Leo’s Center for Alternative Pathway Programs (CAPPS).  For more information, consult the conference webpage or contact organizer amanda.forrester@saintleo.edu.
