Marietta welcomes Women’s History Month speakers March 8 – VTT to Virginia

On International Women’s Day, Saint Leo University will celebrate Women’s HERstory at the Marietta Education Center on Thursday, March 8. The university’s School of Arts and Science and the Donald R. Tapia School of Business will present two special programs in honor of the special day and Women’s History Month. In addition, the evening programs will be livestreamed via Video Teaching and Teleconferencing (VTT) to Saint Leo’s Virginia locations.

“From Ain’t I a Woman to #BlackGirl Magic” is the topic of a presentation by M.J. Jones at 6 p.m. Jones is an educator, advocate, and civic organizer with a passion for social justice. She earned a master’s degree in social foundations of education and a bachelor’s degree in political science from Georgia State University. In 2008, she was selected as an Obama Fellow and staffer to lead campaign efforts in Charlotte, NC.

Her master’s thesis, “Achieving the American Ideal by Eliminating Eurocentric Bias in History Textbooks,” explored the way language in social studies curriculum reinforces bias.

The second discussion will begin at 7:30 p.m. and feature Saint Leo alumna Kasandra Parks, Class of 2013, who will present “Creating a Positive Community and Taking a Stand for Tomorrow.” Parks is the assistant vice president of Revenue Operations at WellStar Health Systems. Prior to joining WellStar, she served in various roles at Emory University Hospital and HCA Healthcare for more than 20 years.

Parks serves on the American College of Healthcare Executives committee and the Greater Atlanta Industry Council. She has a passion for working with young, minority females, inspiring them to thrive and move forward in life. That desire led her to offer services as the owner and CEO of UThrive Life Consulting Group.

She earned her MBA with a specialization in health care from Saint Leo University.
