Women in STEAM conference calls for proposals

The second Women in STEAM conference held at University Campus, March 6-7, 2020, aims to broaden the impact and exposure of women in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics) fields by creating a community that educates, empowers, and inspires. The conference will take an innovative approach to increase female representation in STEAM and cultivate a community of support. The conference is to a variety of methodologies and topics. Proposals from all academic disciplines and non-academic industries are welcome and should explore the skills required for women and girls to succeed in STEAM.

Proposal examples may include, but are not limited to:

  • Building girls’ confidence in STEAM;
  • Coding basics every person should know;
  • Creating a culture of diversity;
  • Data visualization best practices
  • Disrupting the myth of the “nice girl”;
  • Girls can build bridges/computers/robots;
  • Negotiating raises and/or promotions;
  • Speaking up in a conference room; and,
  • Statistical analysis software: what to use and when.

To view the requirements or submit a proposal, please visit the conference website. The deadline to submit a proposal is Friday, November 15.

This conference is unique in that it is not solely focused on exploring technical know-how, but also examines the myriad ways in which women can support one another to increase representation in historically male-dominated fields. The conference is now two days. The first day will be a traditional adult-oriented conference. The second day is dedicated to inspiring girls, ages 8 to 18, to explore STEAM careers. Through interactive workshops, we will show girls that they belong everywhere; there is nothing they cannot do or explore.

Questions can be emailed to WomenInSTEAM@saintleo.edu.

The views expressed during this event are those of the speaker/presenter and do not necessarily represent the views of the university.
