University community invited to help fight brain tumors at walk/run
Faculty, staff, students, and the local community are invited to attend a walk/run event to raise funds to fight brain tumors on Saturday, March 23. Saint Leo student Isabella Jacus is organizing the event, with all proceeds benefiting the National Brain Tumor Society.
According to the National Brain Tumor Society, an estimated 700,000 people in the United States are living with a primary brain tumor today, and more 86,000 more will be diagnosed in 2019. Brain tumors can be deadly and impact thousands of lives each year. Isabella lost her uncle, a Saint Leo alumnus, who had no family history of cancer to a brain tumor.
The four-hour event will start at 8 a.m. on University Campus and feature speakers who will talk about brain tumors from different perspectives at 9 a.m. The walk will officially kick off at 10 a.m., and a closing ceremony will be held at noon. An optional prayer service will be held from 12:15 to 12:30 p.m.
Registration for the event is free for those under age 17, $10 for students, and $20 for all other participants. A T-shirt is included with registration, and participants will have the opportunity to enter in a raffle. Students can earn four hours of community service for attending or up to eight hours if they select the volunteer option when registering for the event.
