Center for Catholic-Jewish Studies presents Rabbi Bemporad, interreligious scholar in February

The Saint Leo University Center for Catholic-Jewish Studies welcomes Rabbi Jack Bemporad, a prominent interreligious studies scholar, to University Campus from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, February 4, in the Greenfelder-Denlinger Boardrooms of the Student Community Center. His topic is “Faith and the Message of the Prophets.” The event is open to the public and all are welcome to attend.

Bemporad had several audiences with Pope John Paul II (now St. John Paul II) and blessed him shortly before his death. 

The Center for Catholic-Jewish Studies also is co-sponsoring two more talks featuring the rabbi. Both will be held at Congregation Schaarai Zedek, 3303 W. Swann Ave., Tampa, FL 33609. For more information and to register, click here

  • Monday, February 3, 7-8 p.m.,  “God, Science, and Religion” is the topic. Dessert reception to follow.
  • Thursday, February 6, 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. “Prophetic Judaism and its Significance for our Time” is the topic. 

Bemporad has a lifelong involvement with interreligious events, beginning at age 5 when he and his family fled the fascist takeover of Italy during World War II and came to the United States. He dedicated his career to improving relations among Jews, Christians, and Muslims worldwide. In 1992, he founded the nonprofit Center for Interreligious Understanding (CIU) in Teaneck, NJ. He has been director of the John Paul II Center and professor of interreligious studies at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum) in Rome since 2009. He also serves as rabbi of Congregation Micah of New Jersey in Cresskill, NJ. The rabbi earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Tulane University and a master’s in philosophy from Hebrew Union College.
