Faculty, staff invited to Safe Zone ally training on January 7

Prism will present a Safe Zone ally training session, open to all faculty and staff, from 2 to 5 p.m., on Tuesday, January 7, in Kirk Hall, Room 220.

Participants will learn more about terms applicable to at-risk students and will better understand what various identities represent. (In other words, if you are not quite sure of the differences among queer identities, sexual orientations, and gender expressions—or if you’ve seen the acronym LGBTQIA+ but get lost somewhere in the middle—this program will help!) It’s an intimate, emotional, personal, and rewarding session that helps everyone better understand the experiences of an often-marginalized student population.

At the end of this training, participants are given the option to sign a Safe Zone ally contract and receive a Safe Zone sticker to apply next to their office nameplates, clearly showing that your office is a space where students can be comfortable to have discussions about issues of sexual orientation without fear of rejection or retaliation. Regardless of whether you sign the form and get the sticker, you’ll leave with a new understanding of what faculty and staff can do to help students feel welcome on Saint Leo’s campus. Coffee and snacks will be provided.

To RSVP or for more information, contact Christopher Friend at christopher.friend@saintleo.edu or (352) 588-7293.
