Celebrate Native American Heritage Month, November 19

The College of Arts and Sciences and Campus Activities Board (CAB) Arts and Speakers Series presents: A Celebration of Native American Heritage: Language is Life from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Tuesday, November 19, in the Student Community Center, Greenfelder-Denlinger Boardrooms.

This year’s theme is: Language is Life Attendees will learn about the importance of preserving the language of the native peoples of North America. All diversity groups with interest in the preservation of culture and language are invited to participate.

Speakers of all languages can share in the importance of their particular languages.

Events include: 

10 a.m. – 1 p.m.  open house – Join for culture, scholarship, film and dialogue in recognition of Native American History Month.

1 p.m.  Experience the artistry of Larry Yazzie as he performs flamboyant movements passed down by his ancestors through Native American song and dance. He is a charismatic performing artist: a champion powwow men’s fancy dancer, an eagle dancer, a Native American flutist, lecturer, master of ceremonies, model, actor, and singer. His mission is to educate, inspire, motivate and empower diverse communities to bridge cultural gaps through indigenous traditions.

6 p.m. – Feature film with free popcorn and sodas in Selby Auditorium in Lewis Hall.  The Rider (2017), a critically acclaimed American contemporary western drama and winner of the Art Cinema Award, will be shown. The plot follows an impoverished Lakota Sioux on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Brady, the film’s hero, was once a rising star on the rodeo circuit until he suffered brain damage from an accident at a bronco riding competition.
