Steel Mags, Green Beret Foundation at University Campus

Saint Leo University is hosting the Steel Mags Summer Summit this week, beginning Tuesday, July 25. The Steel Mags Sorority was founded in 2009 by the Green Beret Foundation to support the spouses, daughters, and sisters of those serving in the U.S. Army Special Forces. Green Beret spouses maintain their families and households by themselves almost 90 percent of the time while their spouses are on active duty. They embody the definition of a steel magnolia: a woman who possesses the strength of steel, yet the gentleness of a magnolia flower.

The university is welcoming the Steel Mags, the Green Beret Foundation, and Veterans Alternative, a nonprofit founded by Saint Leo alumnus Brian Anderson, to University Campus for the retreat.

Each day has a dedicated theme: self-care, vulnerability, and resiliency. The women will experience many of the modalities offered at Veterans Alternative in Holiday, FL, including Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), iRest (a type of guided meditation), and yoga. They also will work on leadership skills and techniques. The Steel Mags arrive Tuesday and will spend the week at Saint Leo, with the closing ceremony taking place Friday evening.

Steel Mags has chapters in Tampa and Valparaiso, FL, as well as chapters in five other states and a “nomad” group whose members do not reside near a Special Forces group.

Those attending will stay in Saint Leo housing for the week and enjoy the hospitality at University Campus.
