Women’s soccer claims SSC Tournament Championship; secures automatic qualifier to NCAAs

Saint Leo women’s soccer defeated Nova Southeastern, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at University Soccer Field to win the 2016 Sunshine State Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament championship, and with it an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Championship. The Lions will learn their NCAA destination and opponent on Monday evening during a selection show webcast on NCAA.com.

The public is invited to join the Saint Leo women’s soccer team in the Marion Bowman Activities Center gym on Monday evening to watch the NCAA’s selection announcement of the 48 teams and brackets for the 2016 NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Championship. Doors will open at 5:45 p.m., with the selection show webcast starting at 6 p.m. Read the complete release.

Rampf wins NCAA XC South Regional; men’s and women’s XC teams qualify for nationals

Both the Saint Leo men’s and women’s cross country earned berths in the NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships, by virtue of second-place finishes in Saturday’s NCAA South Region Cross Country Championships at The Abbey Course. Junior Colett Rampf took South Region individual champion honors in the women’s 6K race for the second consecutive year, posting a time of 21:54.58. Women’s XC recap from South Region championshipMen’s XC recap from South Region championship.

Volleyball’s Townsend tabbed as CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree

Saint Leo women’s volleyball libero/defensive specialist Jamee Townsend was named to the Academic All-District team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. A student in Saint Leo’s Honors Program, Townsend is the Lions’ first Academic All-District selection in volleyball since Kaitlin McKenna in 2009. Read the complete release.

All-SSC teams named in women’s soccer, and men’s and women’s cross country

All-Sunshine State Conference teams in cross country and soccer were announced last week, with several Lions earning major award honors:

– Colett Rampf was named SSC Runner of the Year for the third time in her career while Kent Reiber was tabbed as Coach of the Year in the SSC’s women’s cross country honors list. Rampf, Alyssa Bayliff, Laura Tobin, and Lauren Csubak all received All-SSC accolades. Read the complete release.
– Ronald Cheserek took both SSC Runner of the Year and Freshman of the Year on the SSC men’s cross country awards list, while Kent Reiber was named Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year. Rafal Matuszczak and Anthony Deleva joined Cheserek on the All-SSC team. Read the complete release.
– Ged O’Connor was named Coach of the Year, Arielle Kabangu was named Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year, and Selena Jaimes was named Defensive Player of the Year on the SSC women’s soccer post-season awards list. Kabangu and Jaimes were First Team All-SSC honorees, while Genevieve Gignac and Katie Waddell were Second Team All-SSC selections. Read the complete release.

Three Lions claims SSC athlete of the week honors

Three Saint Leo student-athletes received Sunshine State Conference weekly honors for their achievements over the previous week:
– Megan Charlton was named SSC Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week after recording back-to-back shutouts over Nova Southeastern and Palm Beach Atlantic. Read the complete release.
– Jan Urbaniak took first place in three individual events in a win over Rollins College, and was tabbed as the SSC Men’s Swimmer of the Week. Read the complete release.
– Natalia Garriock turned in four of the fastest swims in the SSC last week and was named the SSC Women’s Swimmer of the Week. Read the complete release.

Women’s hoops to host “Drop-n-Shop” events

Saint Leo women’s basketball will be holding a pair of “Drop-n-Shop” kids camps on November 25 and December 11, providing some activities for kids while their parents do some holiday shopping. Read the complete release.
