“Dear World” project

Share your story: Dear World portrait project comes to Saint Leo on Thursday

“If you had one story to share with the world, what would you say?”

Dear World, an interactive, award-winning portrait project that “explores the subtle and powerful connections” between students, faculty and staff is coming to University Campus. Faculty and staff are invited to join students in the photography project “that unites people through pictures in their distinct message-on-skin style,” according to Dear World officials.

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, September 22, everyone is invited to the lobby of the Student Community Center to share a message by writing it on their arms or hands. Dear World photographers will take portraits of the messages.

“We want students to know they can truly be themselves and embrace the gifts they have,” said Joshua Bartholomew, SGU president. “It’s important that we recognize that we all have a story. This is deeply rooted in Saint Leo’s core values of community and integrity.”

At 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 22, six students will share their stories—what makes them unique, what makes them similar to everyone, and what is the message behind their writing. This will take place in the Student Community Center boardrooms. Following the storytelling, all the photos will be reviewed, and Dear World will post them on its Facebook page in a few weeks. The hope is to continue conversations started at Saint Leo. Sharing on social media is encouraged using #dearsaintleo.

Dear World began in 2009 when founder Robert X. Fogarty asked New Orleans residents to write a “love note” to their city following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Since then, the project has expanded to Boston following the Boston Marathon bombings, to Paris after the terrorist attacks, and many other locales including colleges and universities. The hope at universities is to improve the relationships between students, faculty, and staff.

The event is sponsored by the Student Government Union; Campus Activities Board; Student Activities; Multicultural and International Services Office; Residence Life; and Counseling Services.
